Fringe Poster Exhibition
Verdict: Affirms creative spirit
The Schools Poster Competition was launched in 1980 - making it one of the longest-running outreach projects in Scotland. It has inspired over 100,000 children to create an image encapsulating their interpretation of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The winning entry becomes the official Fringe poster.
The short-listed works of around 100 children are displayed on three double-sided panels in St James Shopping Centre, on the public walkway opposite Costa Coffee. The location is well-lit by natural light from above and proves to be a popular attraction - particularly for parents with children. Artists range from 6 to 14 years of age, slightly skewed towards the older age-groups. The 2009 winner is Mhairi Sedgwick aged 14 from Peebles High School with a paper collage, an explosion of bright colours centred on the silhouette of a performer.
The artists employ many materials and techniques - vivid water-colours, paper and fabric, pastel crayons and gauze print are all put to good effect. Fiona Spencer uses water-colours to create four contrasting red, yellow, blue and purple squares - each depicting an outline of the Edinburgh skyline. Lauren McSharry envisages a mystical dancer using strong pastels. Callum McCraken uses striking pop-art-style colours to create a bold smiling face obscured by a mop of jet-black hair. Overall, it's an exhibition which affirms the creative spirit of the Festival - and popular with the children as they run around to select their own favourites.
