Art Exhibition

Brighton - Brighton Unemployed Centre Families Project - 1-30 May 08 (M-F) - 10:00 (all day)

Venue 38, 6 Tilbury Place, Brighton, BN2 0GY www.bucfp.org

The exhibition includes a range of works including masks, sculpture, paintings, computer prints. They are displayed in two spaces - a large room which is lit by sunlight along two sides and artificially; and an interior staircase. Some work is collaborative by artists across the age spectrum, some by named artists, some anonymous. Names in this review and the list of works at the end are as supplied by the venue.

A female model's face forms the repeated image in a collaborative project including work on glass, work varnished on chipboard, and masks - about 20 works of art at today's date, with more coming, from family members, mothers, fathers, children. Adam presents an acrylic on canvas; Antonio has several works in modroc (sculptural material - www.modroc.com), some based on The Lord Of The Rings; Brent presents works in media including ink, and computer print. Allison Hooper shows a glass painting; Jenny presents photographic work; Jess an acrylic; Mark a collage; Mark Rushton an acrylic on paper, and on canvas. Paul Bellingham shows a work in pointelism and an acrylic; Richard shows an acrylic on canvas. Rob Stride exhibits several works, including two-dimensional work in ink - on wood and on canvas, acrylic on canvas; print work; computer work; and wood sculpture. Spencer shows acrylics including work on canvas. Summer Makepeace displays a mask; Susan shows an acrylic. Valarie shows a mask. Yassin displays acrylics on canvas; Yvonne shows a mask. Zsa Zsa acrylics on canvas including a study of a face.

There are several works by unknown artists, mainly in acrylic. There is a collaborative work on glass displayed on a sunlit window - a stained-glass effect showing a rising sun with images of Brighton - a compelling and atmospheric image. There is a delightful collage of faces (size around A2) with masks made for the exhibition by children aged from babies to 7-years-old. There's a remarkable drawing of a mother-father-child group in charcoal and crayons. A haunting study of a woman's face (the image used in the Brighton Fringe Catalogue to represent the exhibition). There is a painting showing a face with blue hair; it's a large and powerful work. Vlad shows a large painting of a warrior with a saint's halo; in blue on an ochre ground.

Of the named artists: Brent's work explores ways of showing the 2-dimensional image including one of a man playing guitar; a girl's face and trees - very delicate work; a blue sky with faint clouds. Rob Stride shows around 11 works, some highly-coloured images related to photographs included, and strong sculptural work in wood; a head shaped as a rising ellipse; a black-and-white face that's almost like a brass-rubbing in its appearance. Paul Bellingham shows work including two faces, one an intricate surrealist exhibit with prominent eyes. Jess has a fine study of a woman's face. Susan shows a rose on leaves. Spencer's work includes a strong piece with trees and peacock-like eyes, in reds and turquoises. Yassin's work includes a woman's face among three lively works in strong colour, acrylic on canvas, including a large and expressive exhibit (125 x 110).
