Art of the Scottish Parliament
Verdict: Experimenting with styles
The 36 paintings (oils measuring 15" x 19") in this exhibition of the work of artist Karl Wagener are painted onto a panelled screen - three to each section. They feature the Scottish Parliament building, the Palace of Holyrood, tourist attraction Dynamic Earth, and the new Scotsman building.
The paintings cover all the seasons. Skylines are dramatic and brooding in the more dour images. The artist seems to be experimenting with styles, and some are almost Impressionist in execution. Proportions seem disjointed, and there’s nearly a childlike style to his work. On the whole the images portrayed lack substance, and atmosphere is conveyed through the skyscapes rather than the subjects themselves. Karl Wagener perhaps represents the buildings accurately but his works shown here lack emotion - their content feels flat and two-dimensional.
