Twisted/Cognitive/Sublime - Wine Gallery
Verdict: Dog, shit, bile, wallpaper
Art Exhibition
London - Wine Gallery - 4 Sept to 8 Oct 06 - (wine bar hours)
49 Hollywood Road SW10 9HX; tube - Gloucester Road / Earls Court
This exhibition at Wine Gallery is one of three at different venues, forming a set (for others see www.art-3.co.uk). This exhibition features work by 5 artists, hung mixed together, with themes ranging from water to shit.
Katherine Russell exhibits rich studies of water in various moods, in acrylic with energetic impasto. Water (60 x 40) on the right when entering the gallery, is a dramatic evocation of water and reeds. Lazy Pool (60 x 40) suggests an energetic waterfall; White Water (60 x 40) white impasto with black; Clearing (60 x 40) evokes water with an oozing ultramarine mass dominant; Rock Water (60 x 40) looks as the title suggests. The works are passionate, brooding and fractionally unsettling.
El Bedlow shows two works, in the second room of the space, on the right wall. Fly (50 x 40) has elegantly constructed flies on a washed-out ground. Two (50 x 40) has a red disc networked to a red crucifixion. Both works could easily be mistaken for surrealism, but feel more subtle - and disturbing.
Stephen Buckeridge's paintings show shit, and look very much as if they're made of it. There are works on the walls, and a selection of prints in a folio. His big study of faeces, Untitled 05 (50 x 50) - it doesn't need a title - shows sewage in its natural colour floating on red liquid. That's on the right wall after entering the venue. On the left are Secretion 3 (25 x 25) and June 06 (25 x 25). These use paint (hopefully) and material so thick as to be sculpture to evoke shit. In the back room, his Slippage (25 x 25) - with extra-heavy 3-dimensionality - and Coalesce (25 x 25) continue the enthusiastic celebration of effluvia. The venue, Wine Gallery, is a wine bar serving food, which makes the juxtapostion of works and public munching happily away inches below a study in itself.
Kate Genever uses the outline of a dog as a frame to generate 4 studies. Her Idol 3 (60 x 40), with the dog evident, is on the right wall on entering. The dog can be seen in Idol 2 (60 x 40) further along the same wall. In Idol 1, left in the second room, the dog is barely visible, and the work evokes a forest. Idol 4 shows the dog again. Whether keeping the device is interesting is a matter of individual opinion. Idol 1, where the dog isn't noticeably present, feels somehow more intriguing than the others. Colours and line-work are subtle through all Kate Genever works shown here.
David Wightman + Joanne Scholar. Joanne Scholar creates raised wallpaper, on which David Wightman paints geometric shapes - mainly square (or diamond) and circular. Joanne Scholar's subtle textures modulate David Wightman's stark shapes. His colours suggest queasiness - bile-like greens, purples like badly-oxygenated blood, ochres like unhealthy skin caused by a malfunctioning liver. Works are approximately 30 x 30, with one to the left next to the bar on entering, and the rest on the right in the second room.
Curator Mary Paterson provides clear notes at the exhibition on the techniques of each of the artists, and states their intentions (none of this content is included in this review). She hangs the exhibition with subtlety and exbuberance - and keeps Stephen Buckeridge's studies of shit just above the diners' eyelines.
