Plan B - Exhibit B
Verdict: Moody, cool
Art Exhibition, Mon to Fri, 09:00 to 19:00, free
London - Pearlfisher Gallery - 16 June to 8 July 05
Exhibit B is an exhibition of about 50 illustrations and photographs of bands commissioned by music magazine Plan B to mark its first year of publication.
They exhibits are originals of work designed to go with articles. Plan B is an independent magazine covering music, arts and culture, taking its lead from fanzine culture - and bridging the gap between fanzines and the mainstream. It costs £2.95, with 6 editions per year; format is a little larger than A4.
Work shown here (numbered as exhibited, with approximate sizes, and format P portrait, L landscape) includes photographs of musicians in black and white and colour, curated by Plan B's photo editor Sarah Bowles who also shows her own seminal work, including images of Herman Dune (11), The Arcade Fire (15), Shystie (17), The Von Bondies (18), Gin Palace (29), Roots Manuva (34), The Arcade Fire (15), Electrelane (39). Anthony Wallace shows (27) Quasimoto, and (31, approx A3, L) a startling giant image taken from above of Lydia Lunch.
Art is curated by Plan B's art editor and co-founder Andrew Clare, including The Knife (12), !!! (10), and three untitled works (21), (30), (43). !!! (10, 120 x 150, P) dominates the room - it's a vivid painting mounted on a window blind, backlit by daylight - a car smashes into giant bird feet, in bold primary colours. Bruce Ingram presents (44, untitled, 80 x 120, P) a pretty collage of flowers in 3D on board. The remarkable Geneviève Castrée (49, untitled, 35 x 70, P) shows an exquisite cartoon of a camping couple on an elephant's back. Till Thomas shows (7, Junior Boys - Last Exit, approx A4, P, glass framed) a chirpy, cartoonish collage in 3D of the Boys in a car.

Rebecca Cross writes:
To celebrate the first-year anniversary of the launch of music and culture magazine Plan B, Pearlfisher are holding an exhibition of the best and most iconic imagery used in the magazine.
The opening night hosted the musical talents of up-and-coming bands The Diskettes and Pro Forma. A Plan-B DJ filled in the gaps between sets.
The artwork on display is an eclectic mix of photography and illustrations taken from previous issues. Presentation varies from large-scale window hangings to painted floor-tiles and collage reliefs.
The style of photography has a particularly moody yet effortlessly cool and urban feel. The largely graphical illustrations playfully represent bands such as Le Tigra.
This interesting contrast between the two media is a clear example of how Plan-B is pushing forward the way readers perceive and accept information.
Andrew Clare (Plan B Art Director) and Sarah Bowles (Plan B Photographic Editor) curate this well-presented exhibition. It's a celebration of a magazine which has a dedicated and increasing following.
