Exhibition: The Chinese Show
Verdict: Sensual images from modern China
London - Bloxham Galleries - Apr/May 03
9 April - 10 May 03
John Bloxham Fine Art, 4-5 The Parade, St John's Hill, SW11 1TG, tel 020 7924 7500, 5 min walk from Clapham Junction station. Free.
London theatre has long looked East for inspiration. Often though, it's an abstracted idea of 'Chinese-ness', and that from antiquity, rather than the work of modern Chinese painters. A new exhibition puts these on display.
Set designers will love 3 paintings from Professor Feng Bin (Sichuan Fine Arts Institute). His 'Breathing', evocative of a powerful ship by its port, and 'Evening Bell', cast Chinese architecture in hauntingly emotive colours and shadows.
Designers may also find inspiration in 2 paintings by Cao Yang. His 'Light', with its sinister, empty arch at the bend of a brick wall, conjures up the people-less threatening urban landscapes of Edward Hopper. His grimy and deserted cul-de-sac 'Grey Wall', brims with unspoken threat.
The exhibition features also the sensual rose painting of Luo Fa Hui; the voluptuous nudes of Lu Hua; Shi Zhong Gui's blinding colours in landscape; and the work of Cao Jingping, Li Zongle, and Liu Mingxiao.
