FRINGE REPORT FEEDBACK
www.fringereport.com
Kate Saffin to Fringe Report
8 August 2006
Dear Editor
In your coverage of the Fringe Launch at the canal basin you commented on the sanitary arrangements:
‘Lavatories on the quay are portaloos. A bit primitive, but the canal boats parked just outside the quay probably use bucket-and-chuck-it when the water bailiffs aren't looking - so it's a notch up the hygiene ladder. And Cargo has plumbed-in lavatories’
As one of the two liveaboard boatwomen at the Fringe - the other lives on the boat you were referring to but lacks internet access to respond - I would like to assure all your readers that we do not chuck raw sewage into the canal, water bailiffs or not. The canal is our home - would you chuck the contents of your loo into your garden pond to look at whenever you glance out of the window?
I'd put my entire box office takings on our loos being considerably higher up the hygiene ladder than the Portaloos, and possibly even the plumbed in ones at the end of a busy night!
You may feel I am being a little over sensitive but Clare & Paul Blackler are running Wine School At The Fringe and I'm sure you and your readers would wish to know that they maintain the highest standards of hygiene.
Now, my show(A Boat's Yer Whole World) is about the days of the working boats when the contents of the po (pretty painted and kep in a cupboard wi' roses painted on the door) DID get dumped in the canal. Or, as Rose puts it (in another play) - 'emptied modest like, when no one was looking. Mind you, the dooks gived yer away... eat anything would dooks'!
All the best for a great festival.
Kate Saffin
