drinks Monday 1 September 08 Edinburgh Reunion in London
Topping And Butch Hit Leicester Square 26-27 September 08
My extraordinary workoutby Neelam Challoner
It's my first time and I'm not sure what to expect. The entrance is at the back of shops on Chiswick High Road, West London. The sign says to take your shoes off. I slip off my sandals. A waft of incense fills my nostrils - it's a smell I'm familiar with, being Indian.
The décor is very simple, almost like being in India - paint-washed walls and images and statutes of Hindu gods. I step into the room where the class is held - I can't believe how hot it is. As a first-timer, I'm told to put my mat by the window. One side of the room has a mirrored wall which everyone faces. I already know that this is to check your posture and that there are 26 postures to do. While waiting for the class to begin, everyone is lying down and breathing. I notice their bodies look amazing.
A short while into the session I want to give up, but I don't. I'm determined to discipline my body. I swear silently and ask myself why I'm doing this. But the teacher is supportive, and allows me to stretch to my own limits - though one should try and keep up to the pace of the class. I can't believe how much I sweat (it's OK, there are showers). Some people have sweat dripping off their arms like drops of rain.
The teachers instruct the postures, time them, and tell you how you get the maximum benefit from each one. They walk round the room observing, correcting and encouraging - unlike other classes. The relief when it's over is euphoric. There's a feeling of pride, too, at doing all the postures, and a sense of improvement with each subsequent visit.
During the course of 10 days, I go 7 times, and see and feel the benefits of this extraordinary workout. After each class I feel energised and refreshed. The body carries itself much better, skin looks great - and I think I've lost a few pounds. Above all, I love it.
