Fringe Society AGM 2006

Gill Smith reports the 2006 annual general meeting of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, the official body of the Edinburgh Fringe

This year's annual general meeting (AGM) of the Fringe Society looked set to be an interesting one, with a bid from a large number of performers to get elected, and do something to change the balance of the Fringe Board towards performers.

Led by Peter Buckley Hill - a real Fringe veteran - 2004's best newcomer Wil Hodgson, Free Fringe star Steve Day, and comedian and long-standing Fringe enthusiast Andre Vincent all stood for election.

Every year a number of the board must stand for re-election. This year Dave Gorman stood down, with 3 of the 5 standing for re-election.

The meeting was well-attended by performers, despite a number having taken their turn in Pear Shaped At Midnight the night before - including Pear Shaped's own Brian Damage and Krystall. The show overran by an hour, and the late night / early morning was clear on several faces.

Board members who attended the meeting introduced themselves. They called for the completed voting papers. The system seemed vague and disorganised.

Fringe Director Paul Gudgin reported. Topics included efforts to make the experience of the Fringe as enjoyable as possible for performers - from helping with accomodation, to generating audiences.

Questions from the floor covered items including programme adverts - and the issues with this - and unanswered queries about a possible venues syndicate.

Voting results were announced. Pip Utton, Judith Docherty and Elizabeth Smith were returned to the Fringe Board. New members elected were Andre Vincent and Pleasance director Anthony Alderson.

Peter Buckley Hill and his supporters maintained their upbeat stance: Andre Vincent was voted in. And maybe more next year.
