Improv The Movie: Live On Stage

Verdict: Energetic, quick-witted, talented

Brighton 09 – The Marlborough Theatre – 5, 12 May - 21:00 / 19 May - 20:00

Accidentally / On Purpose are seasoned actors and comedians who work spontaneously to create and perform multiple characters. They are energetic, quick-witted and talented. A cinema theme is evoked by improvisation performer / usher / compere Andrew Allen warmly greeting arrivals and offering free popcorn, and by the Pearl & Dean theme.

The performance, in classic movie tradition, involves a supporting B-movie as a prelude to the main feature. Both are inspired by ideas from the audience. Suggestions include How I Beat Clint Eastwood in a Western in Peckham Part II as a title for a science-fiction film with the opening line Is that a seagull?.

Performers Andrew Allen, Suzanne Buist, Kevin Heritage, Alistair Lock, Sam Savage take this in their stride and provide excellent, fast-paced comedy. Like pro tennis players, they expertly return anything served - occasionally a smash. There's no weak link - they share quick-witted repartee, as skilled at word play as they are at physical slapstick.

There's a tense excitement watching them, knowing they don't have a clue where it's going. Improv's often as dangerous as it is fresh, but tonight laugh-out-loud moments are a fail-safe bet.
