Psalms: A Reflective Workshop

Verdict: Serene haven

Edinburgh 08 - St Cuthbert's Parish Church - 13 & 15 August 08 - 18:30 (1:00)

This event takes place in the fine, imposing church of St Cuthbert's, at the foot of the Edinburgh castle. The room is peaceful, with participants invited to sit in circle. The session is lead by Alan Coombes, who explains that this interactive workshop follows on from a performance entitled Psalms earlier in the day. It is not essential for participants to have attended the play, which is a series of short cameos, exploring the relevance of the Biblical Psalms in everyday life. Anyone attending does not have to contribute, but is welcome to sit and listen. All faiths are invited.

Alan Coombes explains that the play is intended to bring comfort and encouragement to people, and that the workshop is a chance to explore issues further, or for people to share ideas about what the psalms mean in their own lives. He invites discussions from members of the group, initially about anything that stuck in their minds from the play. The discussion moves to talking about what a psalm is.

There are a few minutes for personal reflection and a chance for individuals to use the bibles provided to revisit any favourite psalms, or to find some new ones. Suggestions are given in case people are struggling to know where to start. People are invited to read or share their thoughts.

Alan Coombes shares his own favourite, and discusses the meaning of the word 'grace' - and how this can be applied in today's society - using stories to illustrate his points. People share personal stories, discuss the language - and whether the language is a barrier to people reading the texts. He ends with a moving reading from a hymn - a piece relevant to the bustle and chaos of the Festival - which talks about finding stillness and serenity. He invites people to have a go at writing their own psalm - to capture their feelings about life and their relationships.

Psalms: A Reflective Workshop provides a serene haven, away from the hurry of the festival. It provides an opportunity to take stock, and to reflect on issues important to the individual, regardless of faith, in a welcoming and un-judging atmosphere.
