Interrupt
Verdict: Two dancers
Two dancers enter a confined space. They are both barefoot - a girl (Claire Lydon-Strutt) in a red tunic, a boy (David Beer) in white trousers and red waistcoat. Discordant music matches the duo's jerky style, and their routine utilises the small space and takes them within touching distance of the audience. There is an overlay of harsh techno rhythms which then dominate, and the dancer's movements match the sound. They revert to a more classical style. David Beer takes the stage for a solo piece and his agility is apparent. Claire Lydon-Strutt is graceful and athletic when it is her turn. This is repeated with the pair finally taking the space together.
Split into three sections, the second set sees the dancers strip down to simple black underwear. The beat is intense and they zig-zag between two different pieces of music. Lacking in classical ballet elegance and poise, this is contemporary, modern physical theatre. The movements are polished but there is no discernable story - they are just two people moving with the music. A final piece sees the dancers back in their clothes, back with the techno music (beginning to jar like nails on a blackboard), and back with two conflicting styles.
There is no doubting that these two dancers are accomplished - they mould together as one. Their bodies are powerful - calf muscles bulge, strong arms - but what does Interrupt convey? Some may understand the sentiments behind the music and movement, but others may go away wondering what it all means - or wonder if perhaps it's more about self-indulgence.
