Alfilere de Colore - Flamenco Fusiòn
Verdict: A glimpse of old Spain
There's not much 'presentation' from this group of six musicians and two dancers. They do what they do without any fuss. There are no introductions, for example. What they do is music and dancing in what seems to be a traditional Spanish style. A time and place for the first two numbers - Solea por buleria, dancers Anika & La Fumi, with all musicians; & Guitar solo from Juan de Malaga - could be back in a tiled hall in Seville or Castile. Later, when the other musicians join in, the atmosphere changes to something like a scene around the fire in a gypsy encampment.
Dancing - from Anika and La Fumi - is dramatic in the best sense. It's not pasted-on-ballroom but real and fiery, as if the dancers are saying 'Look at me' the whole time. The dancers are lady-like in a delightfully traditional way, and with changes of costumes a couple of times during the hour-long performance. Anika performs one spectacular dance in what appears to be a traditional Spanish dress with a flounced train which looks absolutely wonderful when she flicks it sexily from side to side.
There's a great mix of instruments - Juan de Malaga's elemental guitar, Mutsumi's gypsy violin, Tommo's eerie mandola. Everyone is a bit reticent till they get to their set-piece solos - then they play their socks off. It's a great show.
