The Rain Party

Verdict: Dance with art installation

Dublin Fringe 07 - Christchurch Cathedral Grounds - Sept 07

This outdoor site-specific dance piece is performed in the grounds of the 12-century Christchurch Cathedral, with all audience members given a pair of wellies and an umbrella. The dancers are identical twins (Jessica Kennedy & Megan Kennedy) and the theme of their piece is 'goldfish memory' and other memory disorders.

Just inside the gate of the grounds is a small art installation with goldfish in various containers, accompanied by Polaroids evoking various memories, from 'Grandad before his wheelchair' to 'being thrown in the sea and sand filling my knickers'. Audience members are asked to draw their memories with chalk on a small blackboard. The overall feel is of being brought gently into the performers' benign if quirky world.

The Kennedy twins perform dances with umbrellas on the lawn, with domestic implements in a sunken area of the ground and around an ancient sycamore tree - the theme of repetition comes to mind, as if to suggest 'goldfish memory'. Particularly striking are the sequences when one dancer assists the other to 'float' in mid-air.

Cast Credits: (alpha order): Jessica Kennedy. Megan Kennedy.

Company Credits: Choreography - Jessica Kennedy & Megan Kennedy. Director - Jo Timmins. Company - junk ensemble.
