Nice Mum

Verdict: Very, very funny

Camden Fringe 07 - Etcetera Theatre - 7-11 August 07 - 19:30 (20:30), no interval

Nice Mum comedians Dave Marks and Kris Dyer are in prison for their crimes against comedy. Kris Dyer thinks it's a Novotel in France – but it's not. It's just a theatre with two bed spreads, a stool and a bucket for bodily functions. This little theatrical device allows both players to undertake an adventure that encounters everything from imaginary bars (the alcoholic kind) to anecdotes about sexual relations with a kid (the goat kind) and hummus.

The adventure builds in outrageousness with escape plans tattooed on private parts, and very funny Rolf Harris impersonations that Kris Dyer gleefully entitles 'Shit Rolf Harris'. An easy rapport is established from the beginning. Both performers handle a seemingly endless stream of latecomers with effortless humour and quick wit. The humour is often crude, and many of the jokes - such as a sexually-related cumin one - might have died sad comic deaths in the hands of less able comedians. Happily this doesn't occur. The pair sustain an apt amount of comic interest and tension until the end – even as they harp on about something to do with friendship and dignity, while one bounces up and down in a costume that has a direct link with the great Australian animal-lover himself. Very random but very, very funny.
