Eva Cassidy - Songbird

Verdict: Celebrates sensitive, revered late artist

Edinburgh 07 - Assembly Rooms - 2-26 August 07 - 20:50 (1:00)

The production is a tribute to the late Eva Cassidy by singer Hayley Clare.

Beginning with a softly emotional rendition of Fields of Gold, Hayley Clare introduces the music of Eva Cassidy. The show is a combination of gig and lecture. Songs are discussed as well as performed, the music interspersed with stories about Eva Cassidy and her life. This is particularly interesting as Hayley Clare explains the reasons behind certain musical choices and interpretations, as well as sharing biographical information that might be new even to an Eva Cassidy fan.

Hayley Clare is an impeccable performer; her voice is exceptional and adapts to a variety of musical styles. She croons huskily away at jazz numbers like Wading the Water, and then belts powerful purity during up-tempo songs such as Wayfaring Stranger. She also excels when chatting, managing to be both informal and friendly, and luminously captivating.

Hayley Clare's tribute has sadness, as she sensitively elaborates on Eva Cassidy's early death at 33, and her subsequent fame. The most poignant section of the show is Hayley Clare's rendering of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Accompanying herself on piano, her vocals are wholesome and unwavering over lyrics which Eva Cassidy took to be about reincarnation.

Eva Cassidy - Songbird is a lesson in mortality and a celebration of a sensitive and revered artist. A wonderful collection of songs and anecdotes for Eva Cassidy fans, and a relaxing way to enjoy well-played music.
