Mirrorgame

Verdict: Identity and reality

London – Theatre 503 - 29-30 April 07 - 20:00 (21:15)

24 April + 1 May – Lewisham Art House / 29-30 April – Theatre 503 / 3-5 May – Albany Studio / 9-10 May – Upstairs @ the Exhibit / 11-13 May – Rampart

Mirrorgame explores reality and identity through well-known fairytale, mirrors and four keen and experimental actresses. The production explores boundaries between spectator and performer - audience interaction is rife, spectators are free to roam around the playing space, there are no seats. Set is minimal. Laptop and sound technicians are exposed throughout. Lighting is simple with torches used effectively along with some large paper-lamps that occasionally switch on and off.

The performance depends heavily on audience participation and much of the piece is improvised. There is unlimited freedom to choose what narrative to follow as many scenes play out simultaneously. Audience members often become part of the action, transforming into forest trees, creatures of the night and game-show contestants.

However, at times the action becomes confusing. The story of Snow White weaves through the piece but narratives often take wild leaps, leaving one feeling a little lost, bewildered and struggling to pick up one of the numerous threads. At various points the actors break out of character to converse with the audience. These conversations occur a bit too frequently, and seem unnecessary. Occasionally, the performance exposes the fine line between audience participation and pantomime.

But the company deserves recognition for a refreshing theatrical approach. Mirrorgame is a bold and experimental concept that makes a serious attempt to unite spectator, performer and artistic form.
