The Flowerbed
Verdict: Garden warfare
Dublin Fringe Festival 2006 - OReilly Theatre 20:00 (1:20) - 19-24 Sept 06
Two houses next to each other have two very different families: the first obsessively clean and middle-class, the second beer-swilling squatters. Their gardens have only an invisible dividing line between them, and war breaks out over some flowers that stray across this line. But their children find a common bond - as in Romeo & Juliet.
The result is a visceral feast of sex and violence, but with the elegance of dance all on a freshly-cut lawn. Memorable moments include the middle-class father making love to his lawn, the squatters doing something like the Haka before planting flowers, and a cat-and-mouse game in which a parent tries to confiscate paper jets from the children. The fight scenes (there are plenty) also show huge intricacy and skill.
