Verdict: Bizarre cornucopia of events
Dublin Fringe Festival 2006 - Project Cube, Temple Bar – 20:15 (1:20) - 19-23 Sept 06
Five people arrive on stage with their own baggage - literally, in the form of huge suitcases. Each contains an object central to the character. The characters have the same names as the actors. Indeed, since the piece seems to have been devised by the actors themselves, the characters may well reflect an exaggerated version of their own preoccupations.
While each gives a monologue to start, they try to communicate. They have difficulty making sense of each other, but the failure to communicate is in itself interesting. Ionia (Ionia Ni Chroinin) harks back to her home in the West of Ireland, Gavin (Gavin Logue) is obsessed with religion and philosophy, Claudia (Claudia Schwartz) has a difficulty over her father, Joe (Joe Roch) is obsessed with science and Elaine (Elaine Fox) can only communicate through photography.
The result is Babel - at first it’s hard to see where it is going. But the key is to stop worrying about this and enjoy the strangeness of it all - a bizarre cornucopia of events unfolds. At the end, each character gives a clear statement of what her or his problem is, showing that each has grown.
