Czechomor
Verdict: Brilliance beyond folk-rock
Dublin Fringe Festival 2006 – Spiegeltent –19 Sept 06 – 20:00
Czech rock-folk fusion band Czechomor have a dervish-like frantic energy. A bit like the Pogues – without the gappy grin of Shane McGowan. The gig is supposed to be seated, but their brilliance whips up the crowd – and a hundred people dance in front of the stage.
František Černy and Karel Holas sing and play violin and guitar. Roman Lomtadze plays drums, Michal Pavlík electric cello, Radek Pobořil accordion. Other instruments come out, like the Czech bagpipes – looking a bit like a dead goat – and a recorder.
Czechomor are originally from Moravia, the eastern part of the Czech Republic, and has been around since the early 1990s, although they have been reaching more mainstream audiences in recent years.
Boundaries stretch beyond folk-rock. For example tonight’s set includes polka-style rhythms. They also accompany respected Irish traditional singer Iarla Ó Lionáird - with whom they have been collaborating recently - in a slow and mournful sean-nós (‘old way’) number.
