And They Used To Star in Movies
Verdict: Satire on celebrity
Dublin Fringe Festival 2006 - Bewley’s Café Theatre – 13:10 (0:45) – 11-24 Sept 06
Mickey Mouse is in the twilight of his career, a washed-up alcoholic with a Hollywood barman his only real friend. People from his past visit him – his raucous ex-wife Minnie Mouse, a very camp Donald Duck – as well as some of his few remaining fans. He dreams of making it big in serious drama and frantically waits on a phone call from Italy that everyone knows will not come.
The play gets plenty of laughs by giving the classic cartoon characters personalities and antics from today’s celebrity culture. The accessories that turn the actors into cartoon characters – Mickey’s ears, Donald’s beak, a cartoon-style telephone – are comical even before the characters speak.
Alan Howley gives a solid performance as Mickey Mouse. Feidlim Cannon shows subtle ambiguity as the barman who cares for Mickey - but depends on his addictions for his livelihood. The strong premise of the play carries it throughout. But the ending, while poignant, could have done with an extra twist or punchline.
