Verdict: Excising the Troubles

Dublin Fringe Festival 2006 - Dublin Dental Hospital – 18-22 Sept 06 – 18.15 (0:55)

Daniel is the central character in this one-man show. He stands in his dressing gown in front of the audience, who are seated in a hospital corridor under normal lighting.

Daniel is due for an operation next day to have the ‘truth’ about the Northern Ireland Troubles cut out of him. But he’s having second thoughts - punctuated by spells where he is possessed by various victims of the violence. Eventually he decides to put it off. Things are too much up in the air for him to face the truth.

Darren Greer gives an intense, compelling, performance, which more than compensates for the lack of stage lighting. His Daniel comes across as an interesting Northern Ireland character – full of a bonhomie that only partly covers his pain.

The concept of having the truth of the Troubles buried in Daniel’s body as physical pain – which sometimes makes him double over in agony - is novel and profound. There is a certain amount of dizzying analysis of his plight - with some repetition - but overall the piece holds together cogently. The script is also being sold as a possible tool for use in workshops on healing in Northern Ireland.

Cast Credits: Darren Greer.
