Phil Kay - Gimme Your Left Shoe
Verdict: Crackpot manic mayhem
Edinburgh 06 - Gilded Balloon Teviot - 5-27 August 06 - 11:00 (0:45)
Phil Kay isn’t normally associated with children’s shows, but his manic, nervous energy is perfect for the younger crowd.
He obviously has just as much fun as the kids in this crackpot performance. Each must try to put their left shoe into the shoe sledge as Phil Kay drags it round the auditorium.
One enterprising youngster not only throws in his own shoe but those of his parents. They will have to venture up on stage and do a silly challenge to retrieve them. Everyone has to bounce on the trampoline, except Shirley, who has a bad back. One young lad has to peel a pistachio nut wearing oven gloves. Another has to put on a ski-suit and whiz across the front of the stage on a skateboard, superhero style, to rescue a tiny bear. There’s also a game of puppy tennis.
Younger kiddies will love the slapdash, knockabout humour - and the gentle humiliation of their parents. Phil Kay works hard engaging the children, but if they are not in the mood, sometimes the fun falls short.
