Patrick Monahan - Do The Right Thing
Verdict: Decision party with fudge
Underbelly - 6-27 Aug 2006 - 21:15 (1:00)
Patrick Monahan bounces on stage like a hyperactive toddler going to a party. And that's how the rest of the night feels - like a party where he's as pleased as it's possible to be to see everyone.
A central theme is making decisions. He says people make 300 to 1,700 a day - quoting Marie Claire. Apparently it falls to 250-800 for Bella.
He recalls working in a Quorn factory, working on the roads, and an office job - surrounded by women. He defines life-changing decisions, and types of decision-makers. He says he's the friendly-easy-going-type. In his example, that's the kind that gets eaten by a grizzly bear - for hugging it.
He debates what the right thing is in certain situations - it isn't always doing anything. The examples are very funny. He sets out a theory that it's music that makes us people more evolved than other animals - and gets couples kissing to Celine Dion.
Audience-member Nick is picked for a life-change. He's the intellectual-decision-maker type and wanted to be a footballer. Patrick Monahan shows Nick he can do anything, by leading him through a cheering audience. Nick reads a pledge. He's to go off and change his life after the show. Nick's progress - and that of those selected on other nights - will apparently go on Patrick Monahan's website. In the meantime, Nick gets a T-shirt, and fudge.
