Mixt Nutz
Verdict: Variable improvisation
Edinburgh 06 - Gilded Balloon Teviot - 6-28 August 06 - 16:00 (1:00)
Mixt Nutz includes improvisation, sketches and screen gags. There is a rotating cast of 30, with up to 8 or 9 at each performance.
Jacqueline Wood and Jonathan Hansler bounce on stage, full of exuberant energy, and introduce themselves. There will be prizes for the best suggestions for improvisations. The first sketch is speed dating. Daters have to guess their dates' names, afflictions, obsessions - all to suggestions.
A sketch of polar-bears building a wooden space ark in Antarctica is loose and doesn't work very well. There's an interval of screen sketches that are hit and miss. An improvised lumberjack scene (reduced from a minute to a second) is very funny - Jacqueline Wood and Shelley Islam work hard to pull it together.
A sketch of a prisoner whose crime was handcuffing Homer Simpson to an eraser is animated, fast, and works well. A piece about vermin infestation and Devil worshippers (in for a nasty surprise from their master) has a funny twist. Prizes at the end are a nice touch.
Some of the sketches fall short. The cast work hard - but the show is not as tight as it could be if they worked with each other all the time. There are some quirky and humorous bits, but it has been done before.
