Bridget Christie: The Cheese Roll
Verdict: Fresh, original comedy
Edinburgh 06 - Holyrood Tavern - 13-27 Aug 2006 - 12:00 midday (0:50)
Bridget Christie plays herself and an ensemble of guests.
Best selling author Dan Brown turns his hand to stand-up comedy. He adds a drawn-out literary 'it was dark and stormy nightesque' to knock-knock gags and the chicken-crossing-the-road joke.
Irish Eamonn McGuire is a parking attendant who wanted to be a poet, a pop-star or an IRA terrorist - depending on the season. With a family history of parking attendants, all his hopes were dashed. Bridget Christie as King Charles II looks scarily like Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
The title refers to the Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll in Gloucester, where whole cheeses are rolled down a steep hill with local, national and international loonies chasing after it. Bridget Christie creates a lilting accent to recount the excitement of going with her character's large family to watch it - especially the casualties. She finishes with a scaled-down model of the hill, complete with mini cheese, participants and ambulance service.
The material is fresh and original, taking the piss out of literary prose. And everyone leaves with a little gift.
