Adrenaline - Kate Smurthwaite
Verdict : Not enough C9 H13 NO3
Edinburgh 06 - Roman Eagle Lodge - 4-27 Aug 06 - 21:55 (1:00)
The chemical formula for adrenaline (C9 H13 NO3) on a stand shows that this is a comic lecture rather than normal stand-up. The comedy is low key - wry smile rather than belly-laugh. The can of Red Bull that Kate Smurthwaite clings to and drinks from is lacking that essential ingredient.
Kate Smurthwaite's set easily engages and involves the audience, but her observations of life do not move away from the immediately obvious. After she has trawled through 18 different activities that produce adrenaline, it becomes tedious. The comedy remains too gentle - in tonight's performance, Kate Smurthwaite feels close to being the dullest woman on the planet.
The show is a pleasant hour - but as Kate Smurthwaite says, laughter, sex, sneezing and a good shit all induce adrenaline to flow. It doesn't flow enough tonight.
