The Bi-Annual Barbecue & Other Stories

Verdict: Comedy play

London - Pleasance Theatre - 16-21 May 06 - 19:45 (21:45)

The Bi-Annual Barbecue & Other Stories is a two-act play comedy from a cast of four (3F, 1M). Running time is 120 minutes, including a 15 minute interval.

It tells the story of the inhabitants of Sea-Goat Island as they prepare for their bi-annual barbecue.

It's hard to get into at the start, but it gets interesting as it goes along - particularly in the second act. The gypsies are very funny.

Kathryn Hanke evokes a lot of the comedy with her facial expressions and body language. James Huntington delivers some great verbal humour. Joanna Hutt has most of the funny lines, and the ability to hold attention throughout the show. Jenny Thomson delivers a powerful performance, full of energy and dynamism.

Costumes, props, and make-up are simple and effective, showing that it's possible to stage a good show with a very limited budget and a bit of imagination. Lighting and sound are by Kara Browne.
