Samantha is in Ed with the BAC's five shows Billy Holiday, Ether Frolics, Low Life, Radioplay, The Spaceman, and their regular shows-in-development Scratch. Fragrant Samantha Jayne is stylish in (her mum Sandra's) brown halter-neck top, sparkly black and silver capelet, beige shorts with brown pinstripes, black retro heels, vintage diamante silver necklace, black laced-wrist gloves, fake pearl bracelets, and netted black hair adornment over her pretty black hair. Gorgeous!

Edinburgh Fringe 2005 kicks off with its most relaxed event, the Perrier Writers Lunch, hosted by pretty and effervescent Nica Burns. It’s a big year for Nica even by her astonishing standards - she produces the 25th Perrier Comedy Awards this Edinburgh; and in her other life as a prime force of London’s theatre world, she has just become joint owner of two major West End theatres.
‘Welcome to the 25th Perrier Lunch, the get-together of the movers and shakers,’ she says. ‘It’s 25 years of The Assembly Rooms too, and 21 of The Pleasance.’ William Burdett-Coutts, director of Assembly Rooms, made a speech last week about the directorship of the official Edinburgh Festival soon becoming vacant. Nica Burns says ‘William has thrown his hat into the ring.’
‘Shouldn’t we be thinking of moving the arts forward? When I started off alternative comedy was exciting, new, changing culture’. And those comedians did change things, she says. ‘They pushed the old people of TV and the stage. They made a real change. Now we have grown into a huge and exciting industry.’
As to the Perrier Award: ‘Looking forward, I think it’s time to re-think it. Pick it up and throw it away.’ It’s a time to make it new, and think of more awards. ‘Barry Cryer wants golden oldies. Bruce Dessau last year wanted pure stand-up. We’d like you to think what questions should we ask – I’ll email them to you in autumn. We need a healthy debate each year. This is an invitation to you to participate in what that change should be.’
Nica Burns discusses changes in the Perrier organisation, and mentions the forthcoming party. ‘Out party this year will be different. It will be smaller, on one floor, very clubby – with everyone being a VIP. I want to invite you all to supper. There will be other activities elsewhere. I want you to be able to sit and talk. Thank you all for being challenging and talented. Thank you all for working your socks off.’ And a toast: ‘To everyone participating at the Fringe. And – to comedy.’
Christopher Richardson, father of The Pleasance, makes a short speech and proposes a toast to Nica Burns: ‘The hostess with the mostest – as we all know to some cost. Congratulations on doing something quite so unpopular for 25 years.’
Here among the 120 guests seated at four long school-tables are: Christopher Richardson, who hands over as Pleasance director at the end of the Fringe to Anthony Alderson, also present. Hannah Chambers, CEO of Hannah Chambers Management . William Burdett-Coutts, director, The Assembly Rooms. Emma Taylor, artistic director of London’s Canal Café Theatre. Will Lewis, joint head of press, The Pleasance, and partner, Mobius Industries PR. Penny Sims, head of press, The Underbelly. Fraser Smith, head of press, The Gilded Balloon. Bedlam Theatre does drinks and scones and showcases 6 acts from its Fringe programme. They have 16 shows in all, mainly by professional companies, with a couple of student productions. Today's showcase MC is Jamie Anderson.

Scaramouche Jones, written by Justin Butcher, performed by Thom Tuck, directed by Charlotte Jarvis, stage manager Jono Ellis, lighting designer James Turner Inman, communications & marketing Chris Mounsey, executive producer Miriam Raines, producers Charlotte Coles, Claire Glendenning, Honor Fishburn, Tom Raines, company Painted Face (www.painted-face.co.uk). The Martians (www.the-martians.com) featuring Houston, John Kielty, Gerry Kielty. Improverts, directed by Jamie Anderson, featuring Jamie Anderson, Sam Carter, Dave Reed.
Those here include Scottish Gay & Lesbian Humanist's Tony Challis, also writing for Scotsgay. Edfringe head of press Louise Page. Georgina Freeman, director, and Jemma Gross, producer of Twelfth Night, with actor James Clarkson who plays Sir Toby Belch. Their version is a drama with songs by
Alex Heffes, 11:30 am (not Sunday).
Venue manager Claire Glendenning explains that Bedlam Theatre is the only student-run theatre in the UK, and it runs all year round. They put on a production every Wednesday lunchtime the rest of the year, about 50 productions per annum. Alarmingly for fringe theatre as a whole, they make money. She hosts today's event with press and marketing manager and fellow-student Andrew Neilson, who studies politics. Claire Glendenning does economics and politics and spends the year 05/06 at university in Spain under the Erasmus scheme. She'll study in Barcelona, the Spanish city (not The Spanish City, calm down Whitley Bay) with a built-in lisp. She'll do economics in English and politics in Spanish. But no history - unsurprisingly, as it comes down to a single result. Francis Drake (1), Spanish Armada (nil).

Directors Ed Bartlam and Charlie Wood launch this year's season of their Edinburgh venue The Underbelly with a party at the Roof Deck Bar, Soho House in Old Compton Street - London's premiere gay promenade.
It's a hot night, and hot hot hot is gorgeous media boss Mel Brown - sizzling in microscopically low (above) and high (below) red dress. It's not just June that's bustin' out all over.
Mel's with her Impressive PR team, Ben Pester and Jenny Miles. Two handsome lads are the delightful Nigel 'Bruiser' Klarfeld (aka the thinking woman's bit of rough) and his charming co-director Brett Vincent, both from Bound And Gagged Comedy. Zena Barrie and Michelle Flower, theatrical minxes and managers of the Etcetera Theatre, and joint directors of It's Alright For Some comedy management.
Foxy red-haired and sweet Rachel Abel and equally delightful Bobbie Pryor are partners in production company Little Red Delicious. They are handling Gerald McCullogh - lucky Gerald. Pretty publicist Sheila Bourke is PR-ing Little Red Delicious’s show An Englishman, An Irishman And A Scotsman - Exposed!. Here are tanned and elegant David Burns, director of Burning Issues PR, and colleague lovely Sue Lancashire. Jeremy Austin, handsome and bearded news editor of The Stage.
Samantha Jayne Hulston, head of press at Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) looks gorgeous in pinstripe-pattern shorts, brown knitted halter top, and slingback peep-toes, accessorised with bracelet and pearl necklace.
Pretty Victoria Stiles is communications manager at BAC. Tall and handsomely-freckled comedian Paul Kerensa. Laid-back and debonair Steve Bennett, editor of Chortle. Svelte and sexy Hils Jago director of AmusedMoose. Gorgeous, tall and elegant comedian Ava Vidal is preparing for her first one-woman Edinburgh show.
Charming and handsome comedian and director John Gordillo. Dan Tetsell. Tony Hadley. Handsome gray-eyed Tom Mansfield. Anthony Alderson, shortly to be director of The Pleasance.
The wonderful Christopher Richardson, Father of The Pleasance, is also producing at Edinburgh, for company Brian. Christopher is here with his new dog (Brooke sadly died last year) - Indie aka Mastiff The Second. Tall and pretty supercool Hannah Begbie is a picture of elegance in white t-shirt, 20s flapper skirt and gold sandals. Sexy duo Arnold Widdowson & Justin McCarron star in Priorité à Gauche - Remastered. Charming Matt Tiller is in Ladykiller.
Recklessly handsome PR Paul Sullivan sports a provocative Hello Sailor look in matelot-striped blue top with rampant stag motif, scuffed trainers, and distressed blue jeans. London's prettiest PR, Kim Morgan looks ravishing in halter-top dress with light brown leaf design, her hair elegantly swept back.
Here's lovely journalist Veronica Lee in sexy pink top. Zena Barrie says Underbelly box office manager David Michel is 'tall, handsome and Australian' - and it's true. Johnny Haunt describes himself as 'the world's biggest fan of The Singing Nun', and is doing a show about her in Edinburgh. Fiona O'Mahony looks divine.
Play producer Jo Crowley's pretty in black shorts and gold ballet shoes. Ex-director of BAC Emma Stenning is producing at Schtanhaus, in partnership with Tom Morris. Mark Down's like a tall Tin-Tin tonight - with long shorts, and a pink t-shirt from Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. Mark's here with Blind Summit partner, charming Nick Barnes.
Underbelly head of press, pretty Penny Sims looks gorgeous in halter-neck pink summer-flower top, drop-waist black trousers, black ballet shoes; her strawberry-blonde hair styled tonight with parting; accessorised with turquoise mother-of-pearl earrings, and sexy Playgirl Bunny wristwatch. And not just beautiful - boy, can she cook. Penny confides her killer recipé for Trout With Banana.
The men of dance-troupe-from-Zimbabwe Siyaya are here, just back from Glastonbury. Debra-Jane Appleby, fresh from winning the Funny Women Final 2005. Heather Oliver is producer of The Oxford Revue. Outrageously handsome and gifted comedian and writer Howard Read looks tall, with manly stubble.
Two charming and good-looking gentlemen of the stage, Michael Topping and Andrew Simmons, are aka Topping & Butch. Andrew's in sexy long grey shorts, loud grey Nike trainers. Andrew explains his white t-shirt is 'an homage to Christopher Richardson. It's The Hangar Bar in New York, which is on Christopher Street.' Andrew says that Topping & Butch have a brand new show including the 7-minute Chav! The Musical, and 'a beautiful song that celebrates (Duchess of Cornwall) Camilla.'
Sublime comedian Miles Jupp arrives from Scotland, tall and relaxed, in blue shirt and glasses with wild curly hair. James Wren, Felicity Wren - joint managers of Hen & Chickens Theatre and Lowdown At The Albany with Louie Bayliss are here with Leon Fleury (Spank!). James looks terrific after hols in Ibiza with tall handsome and relaxed Leon. Was it a gay relationship in the scorched Sierra? James: 'I would rather clip off my cock than have a gay relationship with Leon (much as I love him)'. Sounds like a no. James is former husband of gorgeous Felicity, actress and James's business partner and good friend - she's smiling at him. So boys, was there lots of sex? James: 'Leon and I went out to have a holiday and work on Spank!. The girl next door was from Sheffield and had a voracious sexual appetite. Not for us. For the rest of the island. It was like planes leaving Heathrow. We couldn't sleep. So we decided to write about her. There's a whole routine in Spank.' James Wren says their company at the Hen & Chickens and Albany, Unrestricted View is 'working with (playwright) Glyn Maxwell this Edinburgh on The Forever Waltz. I am so excited about it I can hardly sleep.'
The remarkable actress Felicity Wren has a busy Edinburgh. She's in the cast of Greedy. And in The Forever Waltz with Justin McCarron - and Hugo Cox. 'It's a 3-hander', adorable Felicity shyly confides. Matron!
Leon Fleury's many fans from his naked dances with The Giant Pineapple Boys would notice Leon's slimmer build tonight. What's his diet secret? Leon: 'Lose £11,000 in Edinburgh and the pounds fall away.'
As well as acting in Spank, Leon's doing a cameo in producer and stand-up comedy legend Paul Provenza's Nigerian Spam Scam Scam - The Director's Cut. 'It's been running in New York - massive response,' says Leon. Charming Paul Provenza has just directed cheeky film The Aristocrats due for its UK launch at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2005. Paul explains it's about the gag comedians tell to each other known as The Aristocrats in America; in the UK it's sometimes called The Debonaires. Paul adds: 'It's an incredibly offensive joke.'
Here is handsome Ed Bartlam joint director of The Underbelly. Ed underlines the importance of music at the Edinburgh Fringe. He's interested in matching the audience between bands and the theatrical fringe. 'We have 15 or 16 music acts this year,' says Ed. As well as Edinburgh, Ed says he and business partner Charlie Wood are working to do production in London.
Pretty Suzanne Radford is writing and producing her own shows; Suzanne's known to many as the former organiser of the annual Perrier Writers' Lunch - and for her enchantingly electric light-gray eyes. This year Suzanne passes the organisational baton to lovely Anthea Roy, from Perrier Comedy Awards. Here is Ann-Marie Baptiste from Juliet Alexander & Associates - PR for Kitsch Kittens, Babooshka, Shazia Mirza.
Here are directors and producers Sarah Watkins and
Siobhan Wootton, and actor Charlie Tweed, all of Land Productions which is taking Manzillworld - Lets Start Again (blog is here) to Ed05. Louise Blackwell, Kate McGrath, Sarah Quelch - all of Fuel Theatre - are producing Ether Frolics, The Race, The Night Shift, The Silver Swan, Guided Tour. 'We produce experimental theatre, artists who don't fit into boxes' says Louise.
Russell Dean of Blue Chicken Mask And Puppet Company - 'Blackadder meets League of Gentlmen in masks' says Russell. Alex Kelly of Third Angel, performer in The Lad Lit Project.
Director Jessica Beck runs new company Bad Penny Theatre, who are taking 2 shows to Edinburgh - Terrorist! The Musical and The Opening, which Jessica describes as 'a cabaret-style show about sex'. Jessica has just graduated in Contemporary Theatre Practice at E15; she's also directing Theatre 503's All Alone written by Gene David Kirk.
Pretty Tracy Keeling, co-director of theatre company The ALlieS, is taking her play Lilita to Edinburgh. Tracy co-wrote it with US producer Mary Cimino - they've just done it at the Spoleto Festival.
Here's Ed Gaughan (Radioplay). Lovely Sarah Coomes is in Gwynn Williams: Domestic Goddess. Here's pretty Kate Farnaby - comedian Simon Farnaby has the privilege of being Kate's brother.
It's getting late - and the party's gaining in naughtiness. Michelle Flower and Zena Barrie, who have been quite well-behaved so far, deteriorate. They alter The Underbelly's impeccable PowerPoint screen projection - which forms a tasteful backdrop to the party - to read first 'Ed & Charlie Smell', and later 'Ed and Charlie smell nicely of shit'. Girls!
