Yat-Kha
Verdict: Throat-singing rock
Dublin 05 – Spiegeltent – 20 September 05 – 21.00 (22.30)
Yat-Kha are a Siberian rock band that make use of the region's 'throat-singing' tradition.
Throat singing – from the Tuva region of Siberia - uses a different part of the human vocal machinery to create an eerie but beautiful ringing tone. Used by a rock band instead of conventional vocals, it results in a strange cultural mix.
Tonight's lineup includes Albert Kuvezin (vocals, lead guitar), another singer (vocals, Tuvan string instrument), Scipio (bass guitar), Zhenya Tkachov (drums). The drummer's a dead ringer for Rasputin - and Albert Kuvezin points this out.
Yat-Kha open with their own version of a traditional Celtic ballad Go Lassie Go. Kuvezin’s throat singing emphasizes the low notes.
Most of the rest is straight rock. It's amazing how quickly Kuvezin’s voice method sounds familiar. It's like a particularly guttural version of a heavy metal evil vocal.
The other singer works in a higher tone. When the two sing together, the effect is stunning - particularly with the bass and drums in the background.
Towards the end of the night, Albert Kuvezin gets the audience to join in the chorus - and make a stab at throat singing themselves.
