The Sunshine Play
Verdict: Delightful love-triangle variation
Dublin 05 – Project Cube – 27 Sept to 2 Oct 05 – 18.30 (19.45)
This Romanian play - in English - is advertised as being about the people you meet when you have to smoke on the roof. It’s much more interesting than that.
The Sunshine Play tells how a stranger brings a couple together. It hints at a love triangle, but dances skilfully around it, ever veering away from the obvious.
Everything takes place on the same sloping roof, set somewhere in Romania on a summer’s night. A guy proposes marriage – he’s turned down. He goes off in a huff. A stranger comes to the roof: the complex of events begins.
The characters are excellently detailed, and they use the silent moments of tension to get across successfully the awkwardness of their situations. When the climax comes, its expected, but shocks – and spirals into a much more serious pace. While it’s not a comedy, it’s funny - without trying - when needed.
