Spoon Fed
Verdict: Long-form improvisation
Dublin 05 - T36 19-24 September 05 - 18.00 (19.00)
Spoon Fed is long form improvisation by eight actors from The Attic Studio, a forum for Irish-based actors, writers and directors with over 700 members.
An off-stage compere asks for suggestions at the start of the show. Seven players take it in turn to improvise a minute or two of a character monologue, using some, but not all of the suggestions. In a second round, each player fleshes out their character with a name and background.
Then the compere becomes crucial it is her role to guide these seven characters to create a story. She asks the audience for several pairings of the characters, each of which sets up a relationship with each other. Then she asks which of these stories they want to combine. Some of the relationships are dropped, although they may come in later.
In this performance, a young Garda (Irish police officer) tries to win the hand of the daughter of the evil alien Zoltan in marriage with the other four characters playing support roles. Every now and then the compere freezes the scene - and asks for a suggestion to add another element into the scene. Eventually the Garda vanquishes Zoltan and marries the girl, Bollywood style.
The characters chosen by the players are strong, well-defined and funny particularly the Garda. The main scene which takes almost half an hour all told hangs together fine. The desired ending is reached, with plenty of effective gags along the way. However, the ending is a little predictable perhaps it could have been left more open for the players to find an ending.
