ROMCOM

Verdict: Experiment in actor interaction

Dublin 05 – Project Cube – 29 Sep to 1 Oct 05 – 22.30 (23.30)

ROMCOM is an experiment that lies halfway between scripted theatre and improvisation. The actors do not know the text, but are given it line by line during the performance, through a CD Walkman.

The actual story being related is a conventional 'boy meets girl' tale, which ends up in separation - against the backdrop of a video on an enormous screen behind the two actors. Every word and action is delivered exactly on the tape, although the company say that each actor still manages to interpret them differently.

Given the format, the performance is surprisingly fluid, although it can appear stilted occasionally - especially when characters laugh too loudly. However, it is difficult to see to what extent the freshness of the lines for the actors adds to the immediacy of the performance.

A brave and interesting experiment in theatre - although the result for the audience is not that different from a conventional play.
