Exit 3: Black on White
Verdict: Abstract mime, strange setting
Dublin 05 – Apartment in Leeson St – 12-17 Sept 05 – 18.00 (18.30)
This 30-minute performance takes place in two rooms of an apparently derelict basement in an old Georgian house. Each room has two 15-minute performances, seen one after the other, with audience members choosing which room they see first. The White Room focuses on beauty, while the Black Room focuses on ugliness.
The White Room is enchantingly carpeted with real grass, put in position especially for this show. The character has just lost his girlfriend/wife and he muses on her beauty, sometimes verbally, sometimes through mime - with a little moment of wonder at the end, when he opens a small metal container to reveal an enormous real live butterfly.
In the Black Room, the character contorts his body in an agitated and disturbing manner, focussed on a suit hanging on one wall. Eventually he puts on the suit.
While the actors are skilled and committed, with the Black Room character being particularly striking, the meaning of the show is left very open. Although it is an interesting exercise, the overall effect may be a little abstract for some.
