Vaudeville Cabaret Club
Verdict: Lively
Edinburgh 05 - The Bongo Club - 22:30 (01:30)
Vaudeville Club's cabaret runs from 10.30pm till around 1.30am, after which there's a band and DJs till up to 5.00am (varies).
James James in the foyer is running 'Edinburgh's first magic bar' - the customer pays, and James James performs close-up magic across the bar. In the club, there are tables near the stage with pretty candles; further back seating is in rows. Drapes hang from the exposed air conditioning in the ceiling - making the venue feel a like a circus tent, with red and blue lighting. There's a bar at the back that's accessible during the show. There's a smokey, hot, nightclubby feel, with many of the audience dressed up - including tonight pretty Laura Davis, C-Venues head of press, in stylish sombrero.
Charming Dusty Limits is tonight's host. He's in black suit, open-necked black shirt, and red scarf; he opens with a light political set. First act is dancer and burlesque performer Yasmin, in graceful chiffon skirt as a 20s flapper. She does an energetic and frisky Charleston. There's a lively gay and lesbian feel to the club, and Yasmin gets lots of whoops from Edinburgh's lusty women. The Banjulele Bros are two men, one with banjo - they sing Baby Face. By now the club is packed to standing. Tonight's bill is scheduled to include poetry from Big Word; acrobats Edinburgh Performers; The Luminescent Orchestrii; circus from Cirque Idyllic; Brand X; Mikelangelo & The Black Sea Gentlemen; with music after the show from 15-piece gypsy brass band from Edinbugh Orchestra Del Sol and DJs.
Vaudeville Club is programmed by gorgeous Phyllis Martin, and tonight she's on the door. Phyllis: 'Each night it's a mix of circus, theatre, music, poetry, burlesque. Each show will take from these categories - it's a pot pourri.'
