Dolly

Verdict: Sad circular story

Edinburgh 05 - Holyrood Tavern - 16:30 (0:55)

Joe (Tom Papitto) and Karen (Jenifer Karen) are driving to the cemetery. Joe's father is dead. Next to his grave is the grave of Dolly (Emma Prince). She died, aged 16, on the day Joe was born.

Joe complains about modern life and his unsuccesful acting career. His conversation with Karen explains itself much too much as it goes along. The very short scenes are punctuated by furniture being dragged, and light that noisily buzzes when fading.

Karen dresses in shiny shorts as she and Joe attend a Hollywood party. Joe gets mad at the attention she's getting. He revisits his father's grave. He develops a fixation with Dolly and how she died.

Karen thinks this is sick - and leaves him. Dolly (from offstage) interrupts twice, enters - unseen by the others - and waits pointlessly to one side, before going off again.

Joe vanishes in time back to Dolly. She's a catholic schoolgirl. He sets out to seduce her with drugs, sex, and rock and roll. Their speech becomes stilted. The end is predictable.

There is no sign of stagecraft. The show does not get better as it progresses. The technical operator studies the script as if he's about to prompt. The uncertain delivery is frustrating to listen to. The idea behind Dolly is reasonable - but that is all.
