Big Day Out

Verdict: Comedy sketches

Big Day Out

Big Day Out is a one-hour skit comedy show with three male performers.

In the dance routine that opens the show, the actors appear in their bathrobes, stretching and yawning to the cock-crow, brushing their teeth, and revving up with a morning cuppa. It seems to hold out the promise that the show is thematically structured around finding humour in the routine of everyman’s daily life.

But this promise is not followed through. As with most skit comedy, Big Day Out strings together a series of short comedy sketches which, while all entertaining in themselves, have little or no relationship with each other. Highlights of the show are a seminar on challenging prejudices, and a sketch showing what happens when three men with nothing in common other than the same first name, spend a night drinking together.

They do a good take on the classic gag of the two unsophisticates out for a no-expense-spared dinner at a fancy restaurant. Big Day Out is well-rehearsed and well-performed, and makes good use of recorded and live music to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. But although it is a funny show - and worth seeing - Big Day Out will not be changing the creative landscape of the Fringe, as some set out to do.
