Alex Horne
When in Rome
Verdict: Latin improvement
London - Canal Café - 11 July 05
When In Rome is a one-hour presentational comedy show, on the theme of brushing up latent Latin language skills.
When In Rome is a dialogue between performers and audience. Alex Horne invites, even insists on, audience members participating from their chairs – and on-stage. Participation is facilitated through lots of fun props, handed to those singled-out – which helps move the action along. Cheering and team-forming are encouraged.
Alex Horne’s collaborator, Tim Key, features prominently. The show makes heavy use of visuals from a computer (operated by Tim Key), projected on a backdrop screen. The interactivity of the computer allows the performers to cue visuals and sounds to responses from the audience, making the show seem spontaneous.
Part of the comedy is the interaction between Alex Horne and Tim Key, usually suggesting some glitch in their communication or preparation – but their lines are delivered with impeccable timing. A lot of work has clearly gone into the show’s preparation – including a trip to Rome to see the Pope - with consistently good results. When in Rome is a fun show, especially for those who’d like to be part of a show without having to heckle.
