Dalton Trumbo's Reluctant Cabaret
Verdict: Music-centred comedy
Edinburgh 05 - Southside - 21:00 (1:00)
Dalton Trumbo’s Reluctant Cabaret is a one-hour comedy show centred on musical numbers.
It's a fast-paced act with four performers. There's lead singer Dalton Trumbo. Lady Hugo is on keyboard - she says nothing, and sneers at Mr Trumbo. Reverend Po-Chi is on guitar. There's a bassist - that stock comedy character, the over-the-top posh butler. The songs are original creations of Dalton Trumbo.
Dalton Trumbo is clearly the driving comic genius. But he doesn't have the monopoly on talent and energy. Each member pulls his or her weight musically and comically, as they interact between songs with each other and the audience.
Tonight's audience reaction is extremely positive - the performers clearly enjoy themselves on stage, and it is quite easy to get caught up in the fun. One of the many highlights is a take on the song 'duelling banjos', another gag recurring often in the comedy genre. The show also throws in some gratuitous messy physical humour using food, and the usual sexual references.
The ensemble quickly creates an enjoyable, relaxed atmosphere. At the end of the evening, it may not be clear what it was all about, but everyone's had a good time.
