The Ignorance

Verdict: High energy play

London - Etcetera Theatre - Dec 04

Fortress Productions - Ciara Dooley - Abbey Stirling - Sarah Strong - Frank Scantori - Declan Hill - Stephen Hancocks

A high energy play from new playwrights that is full of double-crosses that are entertaining, but somehow don't quite tie up.

That said, there are some fine acting performances. It is an enjoyable romp in which even the mock blood doesn't approach the Reservoir Dogs league.

Fleetingly, the thought occurs that the actors may have jumped a few pages at some point - causing the plot to go awry.

It would stand up well on the Edinburgh Fringe. Before making the trip, fundamentally it needs to decide whether it is a full-blown black comedy or not.

Importantly too, the programme mentions that the three female actors and the writers came together to produce a vehicle for the girls. It may be that everyone feels too much ownership to give the director enough freedom to add that extra dollop of directorial clarity and vision (and stage manager to get the props exactly right) which would make this a very good first play indeed.

Quibbles aside, it is memorable and entertaining.
