The Shaman (The Winds Of Bon)
Verdict: Spirituality and sex
Edinburgh 04 - The Garage - 19.45(50 mins)
Shakti is an Indo-Japanese dancer who has brought work to the Fringe for over a decade.
The Winds of Bon occur in Japan in August, a season when the spirits of the dead return. The Shaman evokes these spirits of joy and sadness, age and youth, eroticism and bitterness.
Shakti spins like a young girl in a full skirt, playing with a veil floating in the wind. Later she dances more precisely to Pachelbel's Canon; or becomes a kimono-clad, older woman in great distress and confusion.
The style of dance is Shakti’s own – uninhibited freedom of movement. Touches of Martha Graham, Kathak, Arabian and Indian Temple Dance briefly intrude before her hallmark final sequence. She lets down her long black hair, reduces her costume to the bare minimum and whirls like a sensuous Dervish on speed.
