Robin Deacon
in
Harry And Me
Verdict: Secombe conspiracy comedy
Robin Deacon wears his old school uniform from 15 years ago. He’s searching for the truth about his involvement in Highway - Harry Secombe’s Sunday God-slot programme.
He says that when the programme first aired, there were rumours that black children had been planted in the choir - putting Bedford in a more favourable light as a multi-cultural place where people lived in racial harmony. The local paper picked up on the possible infiltration of ethnic minorities. Letters flooded in. One reader didn’t know if they were in Bedford or Bangladesh.
The computer presentation suggests that Robin Deacon has put a lot of effort into researching this part of his life. Why did he join the choir? And when? Conspiracy theories and secret codes – fact or fiction? It evokes half-memories, questions – and paranoia.
Robin Deacon is charismatic, funny and self-deprecating. His enthusiasm and research is tireless, making this autobiographical story a pleasure to watch. But there is the question as to whether it’s real or fake.
