Fierce: an Urban Myth
Verdict: Voices from the street
Edinburgh 04 - Assembly Rooms - 14:05 (1hr 30mins)
Finlay (Mark Arends) is a 14-year-old who stops taking tablets for his hyperactivity disorder - to pursue an extraordinary gift for drawing. He discovers his true self as a graffiti artist.
Finlay joins with Wee Babz (Tommy Mullins), Edie (Helen McAlpine) and Pokey (Ross Allan) to form a crew - to make his tag 'Fierce' 'all city'.
Chav Barry (Garry Collins) and Choonz (Steven Cree) object to their territory being invaded - and set out to destroy him.
Finlay's mother Annie (Cora Bisset) tries to protect him. Geri (Catherine Whitefield) - who he works with at the Co-Op - rejects his clumsy advances.
Finlay's crew eventually manage a 'whole car' – a piece covering the entire surface of a train carriage and the Holy Grail for a graff writer. Their achievement leads to tragedy, maturity for Finlay - and a kind of freedom.
The poetic language of writer Justin Young becomes powerful dialogue - or is transformed into amazing rap and urban beats by composer/sound designer Philip Pinsky.
The production presents a world many may never experience. It feels authentic. There's rage and passion, betrayal and loyalty. There's a vivid sense that the characters are real people in a real place.
