Cambridge Footlights - Beyond a Joke
Verdict: Sketch comedy
Edinburgh 04 - Pleasance Dome - 19:10 (1hr)
Beyond a Joke is an hour of sketches strung together with an interconnecting theme – the weather in a place called Flishinghurst.
All roads lead to Flishinghurst in the snow. Nick Mohammed plays the incomprehensible weatherman who doesn’t predict the avalanche that’s about to hit town. Donald and Cherry (Jonny Sweet and Sarah Solemani) are Christians hiding their repressed sexual urges by reading the Bible together - imitating jungle animals and feeding ducks on a frozen pond. Ed Coleman is a traffic-jam junkie obsessed with the possibility of missing a jam - with poor unsuspecting motorists Raph Shirley and Jonny Sweet unable to escape.
It’s not as funny as it could be, but there are moments that are amusing, especially those involving Ed Coleman - who has a wonderfully malleable face, reminiscent of Rowan Atkinson. Sarah Solemani as the homeless Sloane-on-the-phone, searching for real life and calling her friend to tell her about it, is supremely straight-faced.
