Aliens Are Scary

Verdict: Witty sci-fi spoof

Edinburgh 04 - The Lift - 20:30 (30mins)

Three soldiers and a journalist search for missing oil-workers on a distant planet. Americans drill for oil, and the natives are revolting.

If this sounds familiar, it's a lampoon on sci-fi, horror and war movies - from Alien to Starship Troopers, Rambo, and its own spoof film Hot Shots.

It's cramped in the lift - 14 in the audience plus 4 players - but having the action so up-front adds to the impact. The fear and oil are nearly tangible.

The characters are stereotypes – mad scientist Dr Whipsnade (Fiona Paul), hunky hero Brisket (Gareth Kane), tough heroine Weaver (Ruth Bratt), gormless ensign Fodder (Dan March), Sigourney Weaver look-alike Sgt Hash (Fiona Paul). And there's the scary aliens (Gareth Kane, Fiona Paul)

Deftly-written and directed by Stephen Keyworth, it's superbly bought to life by the lively cast. Brilliantly batty, it’s one not to be missed.

Cast Credits (alpha order): Ruth Bratt – Weaver. Gareth Kane – Brisket, Alien Queen. Dan March – Fodder. Fiona Paul – Sgt Hash, Alien Daughter.

Company Credits: Company Credits: Writer and director - Stephen Keyworth. Producer - Tally Parr. Sound and lights - Bernd Fauler. Company – 5065 Lift Rep Company. Costumes – The Cast.
