Aliens Are Scary
Verdict: Witty sci-fi spoof
Edinburgh 04 - The Lift -
20:30 (30mins)
Three soldiers and a journalist search for missing oil-workers on a distant planet. Americans drill for oil, and the natives are revolting.
If this sounds familiar, it's a lampoon on sci-fi, horror and war movies - from Alien to Starship Troopers, Rambo, and its own spoof film Hot Shots.
It's cramped in the lift - 14 in the audience plus 4 players - but having the action so up-front adds to the impact. The fear and oil are nearly tangible.
The characters are stereotypes mad scientist Dr Whipsnade (Fiona Paul), hunky hero Brisket (Gareth Kane), tough heroine Weaver (Ruth Bratt), gormless ensign Fodder (Dan March), Sigourney Weaver look-alike Sgt Hash (Fiona Paul). And there's the scary aliens (Gareth Kane, Fiona Paul)
Deftly-written and directed by Stephen Keyworth, it's superbly bought to life by the lively cast. Brilliantly batty, its one not to be missed.
