Lucy Porter
in
Lady Luck
Verdict: Gussets and sausages
Lucy Porter delivers an hour of engaging stand-up - structured to the theme of luck, with the bonus of a vegetarian raffle.
Those familiar with Lucy Porter's ebullient and impish level of discreet filth may search the title in vain for rhyming slang. It's a clean show, honest.
Relatively. A wedding story's illustrated by potential fingering from the best man; there's insight into Edinburgh promiscuity; men with twice as much as they should have (photographic evidence provided) - and quorn sausages.
Edinburgh 04 sees Lucy Porter's acting debut in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Lady Luck reprises her key lines (both of them); and the elegant debut of a dancing Lucy Porter, in tutu (with gusset modification) - stylishly combined with jeans. There's unusual choreography (by Tamsyn Salter, incorporating talcum powder and an umbrella.
Lady Luck has intellect - quotes from John Cocteau and Eric Sagan; nice heckling; a (verbal) barrel of tits; the relative luck of car-crash escapees and lottery winners; slides (it's a high-tech show); coincidences; rules for maximising luck; a quiz, and a raffle, both with non-meat prizes.
Comedy is often manufactured from a script. Lucy Porter is different - she has a natural ability to help people laugh; someone with the gift of releasing humour.
That's not to say the scripting isn't well-constructed. It is, and there are some great jokes. But what's funny about the show emanates from this performer. It's sometimes unusual to find a comedian caring sufficiently for her audience to entertain, rather than simply transmitting. Perhaps it's a gift, though that's not to downplay the skill and experience. In the end, comedy can't be analysed. It is, however, natural to Lucy Porter.
