Roti With Ham

Verdict: Dynamic young comedians

London - Soho Theatre - 22 May 04

Roti With Ham is 13 comic sequences performed by young comedians aged 15-18 (writes Valerie Aubine).

It's the result of a 10-week Teenage Comedy Workshop directed by Jack Milner for London Borough of Newham & Lewisham Library Service - The Project.

Emmanuel Aboagye, Kashim Altaf, Sandip Banerjee, Jason Dixon, Ervin Hysa, Edgar Lopez, Daniel Norbert, Shelley Reece, Osman Saeed, Dipen Shah are strong-willed performers, delivering one sketch after the other with full vigour.

Roti With Ham is an energetic, dynamic showcase of exhilarating moments - commenting on life's displeasures. These include: trying to get into a nightclub when you're 15; ripping a lawyer off his suit; rap contest with Cash & Manuel; threesome - for real or fantasy?; a cat in the washing machine; super-villain without legs; granddad and his magic glasses; campaining for Mayor Of London; let's rob a bank; let's eat the dog; one girl, two boyfriends?. The group join together for the final song: 'Get Down On It'.

The Project is aimed at enhancing young people's creativity through their interest in drama. One of the cast, Sandip Banerjee, say's he's had the funniest experience of his life - he's now planning to study performing arts. The Project's clearly a fine challenge; on today's showing it's also a remarkable achievement.
