Old Revue

Verdict: Corporate sketch comedy

London - Canal Café Theatre - 14 February 04

HMS Comedy - Dodgy Totty

Dodgy Totty are a trio of land-locked synchronised-swimming pensioners: Agnes Swighandle, Fruiti di Bosco and Fanny Drawbridge. Tonight they swim, and risk shark attack, to Claire De Lune (Claude Debussy 1862 - 1918) and In A Persian Market (Albert W Ketelbey 1875-1959). Shopping trollies and plastic macs feature as these gallant old ladies display a form of swimming compatible with their hydrophobia.

HMS Comedy's Old Revue features actors Geoff Aymer, Dan Fox, Bea Holland, Samantha Sanns performing sketches by Marc Blakewill & James Harris. Musical direction & piano are by Pete Smith.

It's approximately an hour of sketch comedy profiled by HMS Comedy as its corporate entertainment package. It therefore omits some of their filthier material, eg the fabulous Fisting By The Pool. The majority of the sketches are from Blakewill & Harris's work for NewsRevue and their shows Evolution and Revolution.

Sketches tonight include Rev Martin Luther King's Original Dream, Dumb Down, Turner Prize sketch & song, President Bush's Address to the Nation, My Way (Tourette's Syndrome), Sharks Direct, Vivisection, The Israelites, Happy Shopper, René Descartes Sexual Intercourse sketch, Downing Street Live Broadcast, Born To Fry, SS Titanic Management Consultants Meeting, Video Game With Real Body Parts (stunning Iraq indictment), Evolution sketch, The Rolling Clones perform Same DNA medley, Why Buy Celebrity Lies.

It's frisky humour, performed with style by four expert revue actors. Outstanding pianist Pete Smith received Best Musical Director - FR Awards 04.
