It's Alright For Some - Live!
Verdict: Sketch & character comedy
Mondays - 26 Jan; 9, 23 Feb; 15, 29 Mar; 12, 26 Apr; 10, 24 May; 14, 28 June 04. Check with venue.
It's Alright For Some - Live! is a fortnightly night of character and sketch comedy. It's at the Etcetera Theatre, over the Oxford Arms pub near Camden Town tube. It lasts about 1.5 hours, and tonight's the first night.
Ed 'Freddy' Wellesley-Smith (Ben Willbond) comperes tonight. (Previous reviews - eg Comedy A JoJo and via
Search Box). Merchant Banker Ed's on £160K + Benz at Coopers, and hangs out at Al-Barony's (All Bar One) in Fulham.
The Trap (Jeremy Limb, Paul Litchfield, Dan Mersh). Mischievous and magnificent, The Trap defy words. Here, however, are some - The Trap, Bad Play.
Tonight The Trap do the Doorbell Sketch, William Tell (Jeremy Limb), and the Wineglass Sketch. There's a fabulous playlet about a man from the BBC sensitive about his wig. It's a matter of location, location, location, and just what's behind its hirsute facade.
Highlight of the night is Paul Litchfield as a fully depraved Pam Ayres. Pam's poetry's gone a long way downhill, as her screamed The Milkmaid indicates, and surely she never used to spit and say vagina?
Perret & Limb (Matthew Perret, Jeremy Limb). Jeremy Limb's in black Beatle suit and dark glasses. Matthew Perret's in black trousers, black check apron, black Moiré-pattern shirt, black and white flapped hat. With Jeremy Limb on Casio electric piano they sing Mike Dickin's Bugbear Song ('Norman Lamont, you're not the Chancellor we want').
They reveal the deleted sections of major classical works, such as the Dallas theme hidden in Fingal's Cave; Gustav Mahler concealing Hey Jude and a trace of paedophilia; Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony with added country & western; and surprises from Ravel's Bolero, PI Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony and the Halleluia chorus. They wrap with a song subtly improving Anglo-Spanish relationships - Today Goes By & The Dagoes Go By.
Melina, Marlene (Rosie Wilkinson). Talented character actor Rosie Wilkinson delivers Melina, a Greek with language difficulties in search of her small-penised English boyfriend. And farting Marlene from 3 Carlton Drive, Barnsley, complete with clitoral needs (see review - Alice Lunt's Picnic).
Sven Stacy (Gareth Tunley) (Full review of this new character follows performance 3 Feb 04 at Lowdown At The Albany, 240 Great Portland Street, W1W 5QU tel 020 7387 5706).
Mitchell & Mounfield (Brian Mitchell, David Mounfield). David Mounfield's Uncle Bulgaria, Brian Mitchell's a new Womble - names for whom are chosen from a choice of Gray's Anatomy or Halliwell's Film Guide. Shall he be Isthmus, Testicle, Scrotum - or possibly Sphincter? Next they're a client and prostitute (Brian Mitchell mans the fishnets and appealing wigs). Tony Hancock's famous Blood Donor Sketch gets an update, only this time it's sperm. Finally they're Tarzan (David Mounfield) & Jane (Brian Mitchell), revealing a pair of ample manly figures. It's relaxed and subtle humour by two gifted performers.
Venue Credits: Etcetera Theatre: Technical manager - Zena Barrie, Michelle Flower. Box Office - Ayanna Witter-Johnson (tonight), Malcolm Keen. Stage door - Rachel. Management - It's Alright For Some: Zena Barrie, Michelle Flower.
